Frequently Asked Questions
Heavy Duty Towing Questions
How do I get a heavy tow in Chattanooga right now?
Call (423) 387-0740. Dispatch answers 24/7. Give the interstate, direction, mile marker or exit, the unit type and weight class, whether it is loaded, what is wrong and who is paying.
How much does heavy duty towing cost in Chattanooga?
Published rate sheets show heavy tow hook-ups around $450 plus $9.50 to $10 per mile, and recovery with a heavy wrecker around $350 to $850 per hour. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day. Your written invoice estimate is the price.
Can you tow a loaded semi, or does it have to be emptied?
It depends on the load, the weight and the damage. Some loaded units can be towed as they are. Others need a transfer to another trailer or a partial unload first. Tell dispatch what is on board, and say so if it is hazmat.
What if I am stopped on the I-24 and I-75 split?
Stay in the cab if it is unsafe to get out, turn on your hazards, and set triangles only if you can do so safely. Tell dispatch the ramp or direction. Work zones and tight lanes there mean we plan the approach and traffic control before we arrive.
Do you work in Georgia too?
Yes. We dispatch to Fort Oglethorpe, Rossville, Ringgold, Dalton, Calhoun and the Georgia stretch of I-24 near Wildwood. Tell the dispatcher which side of the state line you are on.
Who can call you?
Drivers, owner-operators, fleet managers, dispatchers, brokers, insurers, bus companies, construction firms and police. If someone else is paying, tell dispatch up front so the paperwork is right.
Heavy Duty Towing Questions
What counts as heavy duty towing?
Generally units over about 26,000 pounds, such as tractor-trailers, large dump trucks and buses. Smaller box trucks and RVs may need heavy equipment too, depending on weight.
Can you tow my truck with the trailer attached?
Often yes, if the trailer is roadworthy. Sometimes it is dropped and moved separately. The call determines which is safer.
Will you tow to my shop or only to your yard?
Wherever you choose: your shop, a dealer, a yard or our storage lot.
Do you tow at night and on weekends?
Yes. Dispatch answers 24/7. After-hours charges may apply and are shown on the estimate.
Tractor Trailer Towing Questions
Can you tow a loaded trailer?
Often yes. It depends on the load, the damage and the weight. If the trailer is unsafe, cargo may have to be moved first.
Do I have to unhook my trailer?
Not always. If the trailer is sound, it can be towed with the tractor. Otherwise it is dropped and moved separately.
What if my freight is perishable?
Tell dispatch right away. Timing, transfers and calling the broker or shipper can matter as much as the tow.
Can you tow a reefer with the unit running?
Sometimes. It depends on the damage and the reefer unit. Dispatch will ask about its condition.
Winching & Recovery Questions
What is the difference between a tow and a recovery?
A tow moves a unit that is on the road. A recovery gets a unit back onto it, or upright, from a ditch, bank or crash scene.
Is recovery billed hourly?
Usually. Published rate sheets show heavy recovery by the hour, and a winch out may have a minimum.
Can you recover a loaded truck?
Often, with a plan for the weight. Some loads need to be partially unloaded or stabilized.
Will my truck be drivable after a pull?
Sometimes. We check for frame, axle and air system damage and tell you if it should be towed.
Rotator Service Questions
What is a rotator?
A heavy wrecker whose boom rotates 360 degrees and can lift much more weight than a standard wrecker.
How do I know I need one?
If a truck is on its side or over a rail or down a bank, a rotator is often safest. Describe the scene and dispatch will advise.
How is rotator work billed?
Published schedules show it by the hour, sometimes with a minimum. Your written invoice estimate is the price.
What if the load is hazmat?
Tell dispatch immediately. Emergency responders lead the scene and the plan will change.
Box Truck Towing Questions
Is a box truck a heavy tow?
A large one, yes. Loaded straight trucks often need heavy-duty equipment. Dispatch will ask about its weight.
Can you tow a rental truck?
Yes. Tell dispatch which company it is and whether it must go to a particular location.
What if my cargo is perishable?
Tell us right away. A transfer to another vehicle may be needed.
Can you pick it up from a dock?
Yes, if there is room. Tell dispatch about gates, ramps and low overhangs.
RV Towing Questions
Can you tow a Class A motorhome?
Yes, with a heavy wrecker sized to its weight. Tell dispatch the length and whether it is a diesel pusher.
Can people ride in the RV while it is towed?
No. For safety, everyone rides in another vehicle. Dispatch will explain options.
Will you tow my car behind the motorhome?
Usually yes. Tell dispatch if you have a toad or trailer.
What if my slide will not retract?
Tell us. We may need to secure it in place or call a technician.
