Heavy Towing Where I-24, I-75 and US 27 Meet
Heavy duty towing in Chattanooga means working around one of the busiest freight junctions in the Southeast. I-24 ends at I-75 right on the Chattanooga and East Ridge line, I-75 runs southeast toward Atlanta and northeast toward Knoxville, and I-24 runs northwest toward Nashville. We recover and tow semi trucks, tractor-trailers, box trucks, buses, RVs, dump trucks and heavy equipment, and dispatch answers 24/7 at (423) 387-0740.
What to have ready when you call
A stranded driver gets help faster when the dispatcher has the full picture. Have these ready:
- Exact location: interstate, direction, mile marker or exit
- Unit: tractor, trailer, straight truck, bus, RV or equipment, and its weight class
- Load: empty or loaded, what is in it, and whether it is hazmat
- Problem: breakdown, crash, rollover, ditch, flat, air leak, stuck in mud
- Payer: driver, fleet, insurer or broker
The dispatcher then gives you an honest arrival estimate. We do not quote a time before we know where you are and what is needed.
The split and the ridges
I-24 and I-75 meet at the 75/24 split, which TDOT has been reconstructing in phases since 2019. Heavy truck traffic and sharp curves already make I-24 through the city congested, and work zones add lane shifts. On April 1, 2019, part of a bridge over a ramp from I-24 westbound to I-75 northbound collapsed after what TDOT's chief engineer said was likely an illegally oversized load striking the rail. Height and permits matter here. I-24 also crosses Missionary Ridge on steep grades and, before downtown, runs through a narrow pass between Lookout Mountain and the Tennessee River. There is little room to work on those stretches, so traffic control and the right wrecker for the scene come first.
Monteagle, 46 miles up I-24
About 46 miles northwest of the city on I-24, Monteagle Mountain has one of the steepest descents on the Interstate system. The eastbound descent toward Chattanooga runs about 6 percent over roughly 4.1 miles, with a steepest grade of 6.9 percent and two runaway truck ramps on the left side. Trucks are posted at 45 mph, and the interstate regularly closes in bad weather, sending traffic onto US 41. Brake failures and brake fires are the kind of calls a grade like that produces.
Freight that keeps the area moving
Volkswagen's Chattanooga assembly plant sits in the Enterprise South Industrial Park, a 6,000-acre site with its own I-75 interchange (exit 9) and rail service from CSX and Norfolk Southern. A FedEx Ground distribution center opened in 2017 off I-75 at Apison Pike, and Amazon has run a distribution center in Enterprise South. The area is also home to trucking carriers, including U.S. Xpress and Covenant Logistics. That means a steady mix of tractor-trailers, box trucks, car haulers and local delivery trucks on the same roads.
Weather that changes the job
Chattanooga gets more than 52 inches of precipitation a year, wetter from November through March. February is the snowiest month, and the heaviest recorded snow was 11 inches in January 2011. Farther up I-75 near the Hiwassee River, dense morning fog has led TDOT to install fog warning lights and variable speed limits. Wet shoulders, soft ground off the pavement and slick ridge grades all raise the difficulty of a recovery.

Common Questions
How do I get a heavy tow in Chattanooga right now?
Call (423) 387-0740. Dispatch answers 24/7. Give the interstate, direction, mile marker or exit, the unit type and weight class, whether it is loaded, what is wrong and who is paying.
How much does heavy duty towing cost in Chattanooga?
Published rate sheets show heavy tow hook-ups around $450 plus $9.50 to $10 per mile, and recovery with a heavy wrecker around $350 to $850 per hour. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day. Your written invoice estimate is the price.
Can you tow a loaded semi, or does it have to be emptied?
It depends on the load, the weight and the damage. Some loaded units can be towed as they are. Others need a transfer to another trailer or a partial unload first. Tell dispatch what is on board, and say so if it is hazmat.
What if I am stopped on the I-24 and I-75 split?
Stay in the cab if it is unsafe to get out, turn on your hazards, and set triangles only if you can do so safely. Tell dispatch the ramp or direction. Work zones and tight lanes there mean we plan the approach and traffic control before we arrive.
Do you work in Georgia too?
Yes. We dispatch to Fort Oglethorpe, Rossville, Ringgold, Dalton, Calhoun and the Georgia stretch of I-24 near Wildwood. Tell the dispatcher which side of the state line you are on.
Who can call you?
Drivers, owner-operators, fleet managers, dispatchers, brokers, insurers, bus companies, construction firms and police. If someone else is paying, tell dispatch up front so the paperwork is right.
