Heavy Duty Towing in the Gateway City for Freight
Heavy Duty Towing in Chattanooga covers a city of 181,099 people (2020 census) that is the Hamilton County seat and sits at 676 feet on the Tennessee River. Ross's Landing was founded in 1816, and the community incorporated as the city of Chattanooga on December 20, 1839. Today four major freight routes meet here: I-24, I-75, US-27 and the unsigned I-124 through downtown. If your tractor-trailer, bus, box truck, RV or piece of equipment is down anywhere in the city, call (423) 387-0740. Dispatch answers 24/7.
Where Chattanooga sits on the freight map
Wikipedia gives these straight-line distances from Chattanooga: 118 miles northwest of Atlanta, 112 miles southwest of Knoxville, 134 miles southeast of Nashville, 102 miles east-northeast of Huntsville and 147 miles northeast of Birmingham. Trucks run all of those lanes through this one city, so a breakdown here can hold up loads headed in five directions.
I-24 through the city, exit by exit
I-24 enters Chattanooga from the Georgia side and the Wikipedia exit list reads like a map of trouble spots. Exit 174 is US-41/64 toward Lookout Valley and Lookout Mountain. Exit 175 is Browns Ferry Road. Exit 178 is US-27 north to downtown, and exit 180 is US-27 south on Rossville Boulevard. Exit 181A is US-41 south to East Ridge. Exit 183A is Belvoir Avenue and Germantown Road, exit 184 is Moore Road, and exit 185 is I-75, known as the Split. Tell us the exit number and direction and we can find you quickly.
Wikipedia describes I-24 here as often congested, with heavy truck traffic and sharp curves. West of downtown the road runs through a narrow pass between Lookout Mountain and the river. East of downtown it crosses Missionary Ridge on steep grades. The "Ridge Cut" has a sharp curve at the bottom, and eastbound drivers are advised to slow to 40 mph. The source calls it especially hazardous for trucks. Brake fade, jackknifes and load shifts happen on exactly this kind of grade.
The Split at I-75 exit 2
I-24 ends at I-75 on the Chattanooga and East Ridge line. On April 1, 2019, part of a 1959 bridge on I-75 southbound collapsed over the I-24 westbound to I-75 northbound ramp. TDOT's chief engineer said an illegally oversized load likely weakened its rail. The interchange was rebuilt in phases. Phase 1 finished August 19, 2021 at $133.5 million. Phase 2 began July 13, 2023 and replaces the CSX railroad bridge and extends auxiliary lanes to SR 320. Lane shifts in a work zone leave little room for a disabled unit, so tell us which lane you are in.
US-27, the river bridges and I-124
US-27 runs along the western edge of downtown, and the Wikipedia route description puts it concurrent with unsigned I-124 through a narrow four-lane stretch with exits at West Main Street, MLK Boulevard and Fourth Street. The Olgiati Bridge crosses the Tennessee River, and the road widens to eight lanes where I-124 ends. Dayton Boulevard and Manufacturers Road interchanges follow. Farther north the freeway crosses Stringer's Ridge to the US-127 interchange. Downtown also has the Market Street Bridge and the Veterans Memorial Bridge, both on city streets.
Freight that drives the call volume
The Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant sits on a 1,400-acre parcel of the 6,000-acre Enterprise South Industrial Park in eastern Chattanooga. Production began in April 2011, the plant makes the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, and the page lists about 4,500 employees. CSX and Norfolk Southern both serve the site, and a supplier park holds eight companies. I-75 exit 9 (Apison Pike and Volkswagen Drive) serves it. Amazon has manufacturing or distribution facilities in the city, and the Tennessee Valley Authority has its power generation and distribution organization headquartered downtown. The Chickamauga Dam, 5,800 feet long and 129 feet high, carries SR 153 between I-75 and US-27, the same route that serves Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.
Weather
Chattanooga has a humid subtropical climate with about 55 inches of precipitation a year and an average of 3.6 inches of snow. Heavy snow is rare but happens: 11 inches fell on January 9 and 10, 2011. An EF3 tornado damaged the southeastern part of the city on April 12, 2020.

Chattanooga Questions
What do I tell dispatch if I'm stuck at the I-24 and I-75 Split?
Give the exit number, the direction, which ramp or lane you are in and whether you are loaded. The Split has ongoing construction, so lane position matters. The dispatcher then gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call.
Do you recover trucks on Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain grades?
Yes. Wrecks on steep grades often need the road blocked or a controlled recovery, so we ask about weight, cargo and whether the brakes failed before we send equipment.
Can you handle a jackknifed or rolled semi in Chattanooga?
Yes. Heavy recovery can mean winch lines, air cushions, a heavy wrecker or a rotator, depending on the scene. Call (423) 387-0740 and describe how the unit is lying.
What does a heavy tow cost in Chattanooga?
Published rate sheets show heavy hook-ups around $450 plus $9.50 to $10 per mile and recovery with a heavy wrecker around $350 to $850 per hour. Rates vary by unit, distance, scene and time of day. Your written invoice estimate is the price.
