When the GPS Sends a Truck Up the Mountain
Heavy Duty Towing in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee is about a small mountaintop town and the roads that lead to it. The 2020 census counted 2,058 residents on 1.34 square miles at about 1,850 feet. Tractor-trailers, delivery trucks and buses end up on these roads more often than the town would like. Our dispatch answers 24/7, and the dispatcher gives an honest arrival estimate on the call.
The mountain
Lookout Mountain, Tennessee borders its sister town, Lookout Mountain, Georgia, to the south. This page is about the Tennessee town in Hamilton County. The mountain itself runs along the Tennessee state line at Chattanooga. Its summit is 2,392 feet. Point Park, a Civil War landmark run by the National Park Service, and the Incline Railway, with an incline of 72.7 percent, draw visitors. Wikipedia notes that fog sometimes settles halfway down the slope, which is the reason the Battle Above the Clouds on November 24, 1863 got its name.
Roads that close
The Chattanoogan reported on August 13, 2026 that on one Friday in July, Ochs Highway, Scenic Highway and Nickajack Road were all closed because of truck wrecks. The Incline was the only way on or off the mountain that day. The town's fire and police commissioner said commercial-grade GPS could help, and town officials are asking the state to post signs warning truck drivers. The article also notes the town does not own the roads: Scenic Highway is state-controlled, Ochs Highway is shared by TDOT and Chattanooga up to the state line, and Georgia controls it above that. We work with whoever is in charge of the scene.
State Route 148
State Route 148 is a 4-mile state highway in Hamilton County. It runs from the Georgia line, where it meets Georgia State Route 189, the Lookout Mountain Scenic Highway, through Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, climbs the ridge, passes Ruby Falls and ends at US 11, 41, 64 and 72 in West Chattanooga. A truck on any part of that route may be on a steep grade with little shoulder, so give us the nearest landmark or cross street when you call.
What we do on a mountain recovery
We size the wrecker to the grade. A straight tow on a steep road needs the right brakes and hook-up. A jackknifed trailer on a curve may need a second truck to hold it while the first pulls. If you are carrying freight, we may need to shift or unload it before the trailer is lifted. Do not try to turn around on a narrow road. Stay in the cab if it is safe, and call (423) 387-0740.
