The Grade Truckers Plan Around

Heavy Duty Towing in Monteagle, Tennessee is mountain work. The town sits at 1,926 feet on a narrow stretch of the Cumberland Plateau, with interstate traffic on one side and steep drop-offs on both. Monteagle counted 1,393 residents in 2020, and this stretch of I-24 carries far more trucks than that every day. Our dispatch answers 24/7, and the dispatcher gives you an honest arrival estimate on the call.

Where Monteagle sits

The town lies in three counties: Grundy, Marion and a small part of Franklin. The Marion-Grundy line runs through the center of town. It was incorporated in 1962. The plateau at Monteagle is only about two miles wide, with steep drop-offs to the northwest and southeast. I-24 passes just south and west of the center, with access from exits 134 and 135. Exit 134 is US 41A toward Monteagle and Sewanee, at the county line. Exit 135 is US 41 toward Monteagle and Tracy City. US 41 is Main Street through town.

Eastbound: the descent

The eastbound side is the one that earns the reputation. The eastbound lanes drop in a 6 percent grade over about 4.5 miles, with the worst section at 6.9 percent near the bottom, and elevation falls 1,161 feet along the stretch. Trucks are limited to 45 mph in the eastbound lanes, and truckers are advised to run slower depending on weight. There is a truck inspection station at the top and two runaway truck ramps, built on the left because of the terrain. Most of the stories about this grade are about brakes: a truck that comes down too fast or with hot drums can end up in a ramp, a median barrier or a ditch.

Westbound: curves and rock cuts

The western grade climbs 778 feet over 4.5 miles at 5 percent. Westbound lanes have sharp curves and run through rock cuts prone to rockfall. A loaded truck losing power on a climb, or a trailer that swings on a curve, is the usual call. Recovery in a rock cut means working with very little room, so we bring equipment sized to the lane and ask the state to manage traffic.

When the interstate closes

If bad weather shuts the interstate, traffic is routed onto US 41. That turns a two-lane mountain road into an interstate detour, with trucks, buses and RVs stacked on grades and curves they were not planning to drive. One stuck unit can block the whole detour. Tell us the exact road when you call, not just the town.

Weather on top of the plateau

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, as published on Wikipedia, put Monteagle at about 66.96 inches of precipitation a year and about 5.4 inches of snow. The record low is minus 20 degrees and the record high is 101. Wet pavement is a much larger factor than snow here, and rain on a 6 percent grade is enough to start a slide.

What to tell us

  • Eastbound or westbound, and the mile marker or exit (134, 135, or a ramp).
  • Whether you are on the grade, in a runaway ramp, on a shoulder or on US 41.
  • The unit, weight class, and whether it is loaded.
  • Brake status, and whether the unit is drivable at all.
  • Whether the unit is blocking a lane or hanging over a drop-off.
  • Who is paying: you, your fleet, a broker or an insurer.

Do you work when I-24 is closed and traffic is on US 41?

Yes, we plan around the closure. Tell us which road you are on and which way you face so the wrecker takes a workable route.
