Two exits, one problem

The I-75 exit table starts in East Ridge at milepost 0.00 at the Georgia line. Exit 1 is US-41 (also US-76 and SR 8) into East Ridge, about a third of a mile in. A northbound collector-distributor lane links US-41 northbound directly to I-24. Exit 2 is the I-24 and I-75 interchange itself, where I-24 west meets I-59 south, Chattanooga, Nashville and Birmingham, and US-74 heads east. I-24 also reaches the city from the west: exit 183A is Belvoir Avenue and Germantown Road and exit 184 is Moore Road, both reached by frontage roads.

A work zone that never really ended

On April 1, 2019, part of a 1959 I-75 southbound bridge collapsed over the I-24 westbound to I-75 northbound ramp. TDOT's chief engineer said an illegally oversized load struck it and likely weakened the rail. Phase 1 of the rebuild finished August 19, 2021, removed left-hand ramps and widened I-75 to six lanes through the interchange. Phase 2 began July 13, 2023, replaces the CSX railroad bridge and extends auxiliary lanes to SR 320. A 2026 reference cites a $328 million, two-phase project. Why the shoulder matters here

On a ramp, a tight collector-distributor lane or a construction shift, there is often no place to pull a heavy wrecker alongside you. Traffic control and a safe staging spot come first. Parkridge East Hospital is in East Ridge too, so keep lanes open for emergency traffic.
