US-27 Freight Past a Famous Courthouse
Heavy Duty Towing in Dayton serves the county seat of Rhea County, home to 7,065 people at the 2020 census and incorporated in 1903. Dayton hosted the 1925 Scopes Trial, but the trucks here are about plants and highways. A tractor-trailer, bus, RV or piece of equipment that stops on US-27, SR 60 or SR 30 is a heavy tow. Call (423) 387-0740.
The US-27 route
U.S. 27 becomes a four-lane divided highway through Sale Creek and Graysville, where it meets SR 303, and then crosses into Rhea County. In Dayton it meets SR 378 (Market Street, the old US-27) and SR 60 (Hiwassee Highway), bypasses downtown to the east and intersects SR 30. A second SR 378 interchange has no direct southbound entrance from SR 378 northbound. Rhea County's own page calls US-27 the major north-south road. Tell us the interchange name and your direction.
SR 60 to Cleveland
SR 60 links Dayton with Cleveland to the southeast and then connects to I-75 at exit 25. For a driver coming off I-75 toward Dayton, that is the route. Tell us the town you passed last, and the road number.
Plant freight
Wikipedia lists La-Z-Boy as Dayton's largest employer, followed by Suburban Manufacturing, Robinson Manufacturing and International Automotive Components Group. A Nokian Tyres factory and a STULZ Air Technology Systems plant that opened in 2019 with over 250 new jobs are also listed. Nokian planned about 400 jobs at its Dayton tire factory. Furniture, tires, air technology equipment and automotive components are all made here, so ask yourself whether your load is time-sensitive. If you are hauling for one of them, tell us your shipper.
The lake and the ridge
Residential development has increased along Chickamauga Lake, a Tennessee River impoundment, and Dayton has hosted several bass fishing tournaments there. Walden Ridge, part of the Cumberland Plateau, forms the western border of Rhea County with Bledsoe County. TVA's Watts Bar and Sequoyah nuclear plants are both within 20 miles of Dayton.
Why the lake matters to trucks
Chickamauga Lake is a Tennessee River impoundment, and the Rhea County page notes the section downstream of Watts Bar Dam is part of it. Roads that run beside the water, with soft shoulders and drop-offs, are harder to recover from than a flat lot. If your unit has left the pavement, tell us what is under it: grass, gravel, mud or water.
The town
Bryan College is a four-year Christian liberal arts school named for William Jennings Bryan, who died in Dayton five days after the trial ended. The Scopes Trial brought John T. Scopes, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow to town in 1925.
The county behind the courthouse
Rhea County had 32,870 people in the 2020 census and covers 336 square miles, with 21 square miles of water. The county seat moved to Dayton in 1890. State Route 68 connects Spring City with Madisonville and Crossville, and Watts Bar Dam straddles the Tennessee River near Spring City. If you are coming from the north on US-27, tell us the last town you passed, such as Graysville or Sale Creek, so we can place you.
