Cast Iron, Cornbread and US 72

Heavy Duty Towing in South Pittsburg, Tennessee means recovery and towing for trucks that serve a town of 3,106 people (2020 census) with an outsized industrial history. Delivery trucks, flatbeds, box trucks, buses and equipment haulers all work US 72 and the roads around it. We take the call around the clock, ask the questions that matter, and give you an honest arrival estimate on the phone.

A valley town built on iron

South Pittsburg was platted by F. P. Clute and incorporated in 1887, with John G. Kelly as its first mayor. Its post office was renamed South Pittsburg on May 23, 1876, after opening in 1869 as Battle Creek Mines. Two large blast furnaces and a foundry went up around 1887. Cement production by Dixie-Portland, later Penn-Dixie, ran in the Richard City area from 1906 until 1980, and Vulcan Materials later bought the site. Richard City was annexed in 1985. Industrial places like this keep truck traffic that other small towns never see.

Lodge and the foundry trucks

Lodge, the cast-iron cookware maker, is headquartered in South Pittsburg and produces most of its cast iron in its foundry here. Lodge also opened a second foundry in New Hope, Tennessee, in 2017. A foundry means inbound raw material and outbound pallets, so you will see tractor-trailers and straight trucks working local streets. Customers who stop short of a dock or get wedged in a tight turn are a regular kind of call for us.

Roads and the river

US 72 runs through the city, linking Jasper to the north with Bridgeport, Alabama, to the south. State Route 156 crosses the Tennessee River on the Shelby Reinhart Bridge toward New Hope and Haletown. The town sits at about 630 feet, described as the lowest incorporated city in the East Tennessee Grand Division, in the southwestern Sequatchie Valley between the Cumberland Plateau and Guntersville Lake. Interstate 24 passes just north of the city through Kimball. Trucks leaving the interstate at exit 152 use US 72 to reach town.

Why valley roads need a careful recovery

A truck in a ditch beside a river valley road is a winching problem before it is a towing problem. Soft shoulders, drainage ditches and narrow bridge approaches mean we choose the wrecker, the winch line and the angle of pull before we hook anything. If a unit is on its side, the load comes first. We may need a second truck or a flatbed to move freight before the tractor and trailer come upright.

Festival weekends

The National Cornbread Festival is held in South Pittsburg. Festival crowds mean more cars, RVs and buses on the same few streets, and a parked tour bus or a broken-down motorhome can tie up downtown quickly. If you have a disabled coach in or near the festival area, tell us exactly which street and whether passengers are still aboard.

Information that helps dispatch

  • Your road: US 72, SR 156 or a side street, and the nearest cross street or bridge.
  • Direction of travel and which side of the road you stopped on.
  • The unit and weight class, and loaded or empty.
  • Whether the unit is blocking a lane, a driveway or a loading dock.
  • Who authorizes the work: you, your fleet, a customer or an insurer.
